Transfer the stew meat and onion into the crockpot, pour the seasoned broth over them. We needed it to be gluten free so we used 1/2 cup of corn starch instead of the flour. The great thing about making homemade seasoning rather than buying pre-made packets is that you can adjust for your personal taste! I made crawfish ettoufee last night and would have made more but I ran out of beef stew seasoning mix (which that is what it calls for)…so anyway, I have crawfish left over and so now I won’t waste it. We dial back the heat a little for the kids, but it has been our go-to for some time. I can’t wait until dinner time. I have a question – if I am going to thicken with arrow root or cornstarch (gluten free) – do I add those to the spice mixture before browning the meat, or do I just use spices and thicken afterwards? I haven’t tried making it gluten free — I think you could use almond flour or cornstarch (a smaller amount of cornstarch probably). I made this and it was truly delicious. Added more of a few don’t know if brand or age of my spice. I wish I would have read the comments before not after I added the spices as you specified. Additionally, I (heresy, I know) took one cube of Knorr beef seasoning and mashed it into powder in the mix (rubbing it between my fingers until it dissolved into the mix). Don’t understand when everyone else is putting how good it was…:( very dissapointing. I thought this had WAY too much black pepper as some others did, and I used only 1 T.
